Nestled amidst the gentle rolling County Kildare countryside and near to Donadea Forest Park, Savannah House is a respite facility which provides overnight stays to young people already availing of Extern services. This includes young people who are living at home with parents, extended family or foster parents.

One of four family respite centres operated by Extern, Savannah House has welcomed over 2,500 children from across Ireland since opening its doors in 2011.

It offers children who would not otherwise get the chance of a break, to avail of some time away, while others can come to stay when they are facing challenging situations at home, or in care, and while they are being supported on one of Extern’s programmes, including:

• Janus
• Intensive Home Support Service,
• Garda Youth Diversion Projects and
• Youth Support

Staff deliver a varied programme of support which includes day trips and overnights. Activities on site act as a means to engage young people and help deliver supportive psychological and social care interventions by Extern’s experienced staff.

Each young person attending is encouraged to develop social and interpersonal skills and, depending on age and ability, they take part in independent living skills development, such as: managing a small budget, cooking, and maintaining their living space with the assistance of their key worker.

Young people are engaged positively and supervised at all times whilst at Savannah House.

In recent years, Extern has been providing family breaks away in Savannah, allowing them to have time together as a unit in a safe and supportive environment, with the support of key workers to encourage positive family interaction and opportunity for parental guidance and skills enhancement.

Savannah House has four large bedrooms, four resource rooms fully equipped with various activity opportunities, a comfortable lounge area and fully equipped kitchen.

Each year it enables close to 400 young people to overcome some of the challenges they face in their daily lives, giving them a life-changing opportunity to discover who they can be.

This is enabled through a wide range of activities, both indoor and outdoor, including:

• Health & Beauty room
• Art space
• Pool room with PlayStation and table football
• Table tennis
• Full drum kit and musical instruments
• Tennis/basketball court
• Gardens with various outdoor games
• Cycling
